I thought I would do a post on Egg Substitutions for all of you lovelies that avoid egg! (Whether that be because you are allergic, intolerant or vegan).
My multiple allergy son can actually tolerate egg, but my daughter, Layla can’t. So I will often make things dairy, gluten and egg free to cater for them both!
Experts believe that around 2% of babies have egg allergies! And as we all know first hand, allergies are on the rise. A friend of mine with no history of allergies, has recently developed an allergy to eggs too!
My Top 8 Egg Substitutions
1. Fizzy Drink! (100ml per egg)
I know this sounds bizarre, but it is tried and tested! This is great in cakes and sponges, it keeps them fluffy and moist. Coke works best with Chocolate. Lemonade best with Vanilla.
2. Apple Sauce
(64g of Apple Sauce per egg)
Make sure it is unsweetened apple sauce. This is a great natural substitute… and one of your five a day in cakes means it’s ok to eat, right?
3. Ripe Bananas
(1/2 mashed banana per egg)
Another one of your five a day! Woohoo!
4. Chia Seeds
(1 Tbsp Chia Seeds & 3 Tbsp water)
Grind your Chia Seeds, then measure 1 tbsp (per egg required), add the water and stir well. Put in fridge for 15 minutes. It should then be a sticky egg-like texture.
(Follow the back of the box for instructions) Orgran ‘No Egg Egg Replacer’.
This is a great product to have in your cupboard, a staple if you avoid eggs.
6. Ground Flax
(1 Tbsp Ground Flax & 3Tbsp water)
Firstly, grind your Flax seed, then measure 1 tbsp (per egg required), add water and stir well. Put in fridge for 15 minutes. It should then be a sticky egg-like texture.
7. Baking Soda & Vinegar
(1 tsp Baking Soda & 1 TBSP Cider Vinegar /White Vinegar).
I use this in my cake recipe and it really is delicious, this works so much better than Orgran’s ‘No Egg Egg Replacer’ in cakes.
Here is my cake recipe if you fancy trying it out!
8. Chick Pea Water (Aquafaba)
This sounds truly disgusting, but it really works! It’s great for an egg-free meringue! (I will do a recipe post on this in due course!)
*You can also use 3TBSP of Peanut butter in replacement of one egg, but this is an absolute no go for us (and many of you)!
What is your go-to egg substitution? If you try any of these out, please let me know how you get on!
